The Importance of Being Whole Brained
Our brain consists of a stem which controls many of the basic reflex and survival functions in the body. The brainstem would have been the original part of the brain. As we have evolved the brain has expanded and it’s capacity has extended. Above the stem, two parts of the brain the left and right brain have evolved. Being whole brained means using both sides of our brain and this is especially important to our mental health.
As a result, these two portions control different things and are not directly connected. When we think we tend to use one side of the brain more than the other. Logical responses tend to come from the left side more, and emotional responses tend to come from the right side.
Don’t be a Drama Queen
Being whole brained cannot change a situation, but it can change the way you think about something. In other words, you can take excessive emotion to something out of the equation. When you do this, you become less judgemental and far less reactive. When used regularly this technique will allow your life to flow more smoothly with greater synchronicity. In a spiritual sense, you will bring your values more into your authentic self, there will be less conflict, and you will feel generally more at peace. Since you began looking at life through whole brained glasses.
“When the brain’s hemispheres are phase locked and work as one, a number of known benefits result, including heightened awareness, improved recall, more self-programming flexibility, and heightened creativity – ‘super learning”.
Christopher M. Bache
The Lizard Brain
“The lizard brain is hungry, scared, angry, and horny. Lizard brain only wants to eat and be safe.
Consequently lizard brain will fight (to the death) if it has to, but would rather run away. It likes a vendetta and has no trouble getting angry. The lizard brain cares what everyone else thinks because status in the tribe is essential to its survival.
A squirrel runs around looking for nuts, hiding from foxes, listening for predators, and watching for other squirrels. The squirrel does this because that’s all it can do. All the squirrel has is a lizard brain.
Why Did The Chicken Cross the Road
The only correct answer is ‘Because it’s lizard brain told it to.’ Wild animals are wild because the only brain they possess is a lizard brain.
The lizard brain is not merely a concept. It’s real, and it’s living on the top of your spine, fighting for your survival. But, of course, survival and success are not the same things. The lizard brain is the reason you’re afraid, the reason you don’t do all the art you can, the reason you don’t ship when you can. The lizard brain is the source of the resistance.”
Quieting Your Lizard Brain
Your brain has three parts. The oldest and smallest is the brain stem. The power of the brain stem is limited so it is called the Lizard or Reptilian brain, although it’s correct title is the amygdala. However, for a little tiny part of the brain, it can cause a whole lot of problems in our lives.
The amygdala is the part of the brain that modulates memory consolidation. Every experience we have does not sink into our long-term memory immediately. Every learning experience goes into a storage system. This storage system has the potential to hold that memory or belief over a lifetime. Although the amygdala is not the only part of the brain to be involved in memory, recent studies have indicated that it also controls other areas of the brain regarding memory.
The lizard brain has a fierce grip
It certainly controls all our basic instincts such as fear, flight, fight, sex, anxiety, and addiction. The lizard brain hates change. It loves to keep things just as they are in the present, it wants to hold on to all our fears and anxieties. It is the part of the brain that wants to keep us safe.
The lizard brain allows us to react, not just to a threat but to anything, in an immediate and automatic way. You can see, that when we were hunters, this immediate reaction saved many lives. No Hunter wanted to be caught like a rabbit in headlights when faced with danger they would have needed to make a very quick decision – flight or fight.
“You are here to evolve and make your consciousness high.
Humans are here to dance, sing and celebrate life.
You are here to help others to make their life happy.
We are here not to compete, but to learn, evolve and excel.
Human beings are not here to create divisions in the name of prophets and religions.
We are here to encompass the world with love and light.”
― Amit Ray,
“Pain is a relatively objective, physical phenomenon; suffering is our psychological resistance to what happens. Events may create physical pain, but they do not in themselves create suffering. Resistance creates suffering. Stress happens when your mind resists what is… The only problem in your life is your mind’s resistance to life as it unfolds. ”
“The closer you come to knowing that you alone create the world of your experience, the more vital it becomes for you to discover just who is doing the creating.”
― Eric Micha’el Leventhal
